I have started to become more and more skeptical of movies that are "based on a true story" or "inspired by real events" because of how little truth they often have. This reminds me of one of my favorite movie intros in Anchorman when it says "The following is based on actual events. Only the names, locations and events have been changed." Most of the movies in this genre are not as ridiculous, or as funny, as Anchorman, but almost.
With that being said, I thought Social Network was very well done. I have read a little bit about how accurate the movie really is to the story of Mark Zuckerberg and let's just say its producers and director really capitalized on their artistic license. Please understand it is no Pearl Harbor, and I mean that as the greatest of compliments. The writing was clever, quick witted, and fast-paced. It really peeks your interest because if you zone out for a few minutes you might be lost. I was never bored and that is quite an accomplishment over a two-hour period. The script really carries the actors, who do a decent enough job. Throughout the movie you hop back-and-forth in time and you have to piece together what's happening, which isn't hard, but it makes the movie more interesting.
I give this movie an A-. Most critics loved it and I am not going to disagree just to be different. It's a quality movie, mostly fiction, but who cares anymore anyway? Go watch a documentary if you want accuracy; and after you wake up from your three hour nap go see this movie and enjoy yourself.
I was actually considering not viewing this film, as I decided it was likely boring (come on, it's Facebook) and knew it departed from the facts liberally. You've convinced me otherwise. Thanks!
ReplyDeleteI am intrigued by this movie. If I just went by the trailers... this seems like exactly the kind of movie I'd hate. But people keep telling me it's actually really good. Perhaps I'll have to give it a shot.
ReplyDeleteBy how you describe this movie, it reminds me Paper Hearts, only better. Something about documentaries bores and intrigues me. I'll have to watch this movie now.
ReplyDeleteI actually saw the trailer and thought I'd like it. Then I read a whole bunch of reviews and have heard very little negative things about this movie. Maybe I'll go check it out.
ReplyDeleteI saw the trailer and it didn't really look interesting, but I read an article on the newspaper introducing the movie. It sounded really fun~!
ReplyDeleteHope you guys gave it a shot
